It has been a while since I posted on here. My focus recently has been around transitioning jobs, managing balance at home, driving some of my consulting projects...which means less time for reading, posting, and generally managing my online presence.

At times, this void of posting can feel like I am not meeting my goals. But that is not true and Essentialism was the perfect book to be reading at this time to keep me grounded.

WIN and FoCuS are two great tips that come from the book.

WIN - What's Important Now, is a great frame of reference to drill down on the one thing that is truly the most important in the here and now. This allows you to focus internally, not against your peers, friends, competition....or even worse, time. Asking yourself What's Important Now grounds you in the most important work for the moment. I am all about energy and managing your balance so you can contribute positive energy and be fully present when you are at work or home. If I tried to read at my normal pace, while posting, during a heavy transition period at home and work, I would have been tired, in a bad mood, and a low value contributor to almost all of my work. Since I did not do this, I was able to better manage my energy, bringing better value to what was truly important at that time.

FCS or FoCuS - is a great method to lead within an organization.

  • Fewer things done better

  • Communicating the right information to the right people at the right time

  • Speed and quality of decision making

By having a greater sense of focus during this busy time in our home's life was really helpful. Essentialism is a great book to help leaders understand the importance of being focused and how that impacts the clarity of an organization or family's energy. Through this clarity, everyone is able to contribute at a higher level, feeling more valued and fulfilled in their efforts - leading to better outcomes.

Even though it took me a while to finish this book due to life being loaded up with transitions and role changes, it is an easy read. I actually liked reading it slowly to put in to practice some of the tips that came out of the book. I would even go back and re-read sections as I was applying aspects of the book to reinforce the process.

Pick up Essentialism today if you need better focus, goal setting, and clarity in your work and life.
