People have been asking me why I am reading a cook book and publicizing it on my business blog. It's rather simple, Salt Fat Acid Heat teaches us about the fundamentals of cooking. How do we take core constructs and mold them to our cooking style. How do we taste, test, and adjust to make our menu for our homes. How do we evolve from a set of core skills through intentional practice.
The same principles apply to how sport is taught to children or how we grow as leaders and business people. There are core fundamental skills that we need in order to excel at a basic level. Then from there, we need to understand where we are stronger and weaker and focus our growth through practice based on understanding our skill sets.
By reading and writing about Salt Fat Acid Heat, I am reminding myself how much we can learn and apply from different areas of our lives. If we want to be leaders, we need to embrace continuous growth and learning. This can be made more fun and enjoyable by turning to different outlets, like sports or cooking or other hobbies that you enjoy to take information from one area of your life and applying it to others.
We must all understand that we cannot follow a recipe our whole lives and expect to be happy. We should instead understand the fundamentals of cooking, or working, or happiness and our personal strengths and grow around our unique attributes. This is what makes working, living, or cooking really fun. I often read recipes for inspiration on what I want to cook next...similarly, I read business books (recipes) for inspiration on how to lead, grow, and work more effectively.
As we close out 2018 and head into an exciting 2019, take time to think about how you need to develop your fundamental skills so you can empower your style of leadership or cooking. Happy New Year and whether you lead a better team or cook a better meal in 2019, be sure to thank practice and your attention to fundamental skills being used across your areas of strength.
Here is to a year of growth and learning, Happy New Year!
